A camera image is easier to use when it is paired with a location, a description of what is visible, and an explanation of what remains unknown. Bright reflections, deposits, or standing water can look dramatic on screen. Ask the inspector to connect the footage to the actual drainage problem.
FIELD NOTE
Separate Observation From Interpretation
An observation might be roots visible at a joint, a section holding water, or a camera that could not pass an obstruction. The interpretation is what that means for flow and repair. Ask the inspector to identify both, especially before a costly recommendation.
Find out whether the line was cleaned before filming. Heavy buildup may obscure the pipe wall and joints. If the view is limited, an inspection after cleaning may provide more reliable information about pipe condition.
FIELD NOTE
Locate The Finding
Ask for the approximate distance from the entry point and where that places the issue on the property. A distance reading alone is less useful if the camera route or entry point is unclear. A surface mark or sketch can help you understand a proposed excavation area.
Also ask which sections looked open and which were not reached. A defect in one segment does not, by itself, describe the entire line. Conversely, a normal-looking portion cannot rule out a problem beyond the camera range.
FIELD NOTE
Connect The Report To Action
For a blockage, ask what cleaning method is being considered and whether a follow-up view is needed. For a crack or offset, ask whether it explains the symptoms and which repair options address it. For standing water, ask whether the cause is visible or still uncertain.
Keep the footage, stills, date, and written recommendation. If you seek another opinion, share the full context rather than a single frame. It allows the next professional to evaluate the same evidence and its limitations.
