Moving a sink or adding a fixture changes more than the visible layout. Water supply, drains, wall space, cabinetry, and access all need to support the new plan. Early plumbing questions help the design and the work schedule stay aligned.
FIELD NOTE
Show The Existing Layout
Photograph the room, the cabinet interiors, and any accessible pipework. Mark which fixtures stay, which move, and which are new. Share appliance and fixture model information as soon as it is available. A deeper sink, larger vanity, or different shower control may require changes behind the finished surface even when its exterior dimensions seem close.
FIELD NOTE
Discuss Where Connections Can Go
Ask the plumber to review the proposed fixture positions before cabinets or tile are finalized. Drain routing, venting, supply paths, and service access can constrain a layout. If a wall or floor must be opened, clarify the likely openings and who restores finishes. A visual plan is helpful, but site conditions can change after demolition reveals the existing plumbing.
FIELD NOTE
Plan Water Interruptions And Inspections
Confirm when the old fixtures will be disconnected, when rough plumbing can be assessed, and when final connections will be made. Ask who coordinates other trades and who approves changes in scope. Keep essential bathrooms or kitchen access in mind during the schedule. If the home has only one working toilet, tell the team so the sequence can be planned around that need.
FIELD NOTE
Test Before Closing And After Finishing
Discuss how accessible new connections will be checked before they are covered. At completion, run each fixture, check drainage and visible joints, and review controls with the installer. Keep model numbers, photos of concealed work when available, and invoices in one place. Those records help future maintenance and make it easier to distinguish a fixture fault from a problem in the surrounding plumbing.
