THE FIELD GUIDE / FIXTURE INSTALLATION

Planning A Sink Replacement Without Connection Surprises

A simple planning guide for sink size, cabinet space, drains, and installation scope.

A new sink changes more than the view from above. Its bowl position, depth, and drain location determine how the existing cabinet and piping will work. Reviewing the full assembly before purchase makes the project easier to price and schedule.

FIELD NOTE

Measure The Whole Opening

Record the outside dimensions of the current sink, the opening in the counter, and the cabinet width below. Note whether the sink sits on top of the counter, below it, or is part of a vanity. A deeper bowl may reduce room for a disposal, trap, shelves, or stored items. Counter material and condition also affect whether an existing cutout can accept a different shape.

FIELD NOTE

Map What Connects To It

Photograph the drain, trap, shutoff valves, faucet supplies, and any dishwasher or disposal connection. The position of the new drain may require piping changes even when the sink footprint looks similar. If the old cabinet shows swelling, staining, or a persistent odor, mention that before installation. Replacing a fixture without addressing a damaged supporting surface can leave a problem behind.

FIELD NOTE

Separate Product Choice From Work Scope

Ask whether the sink package includes a drain assembly, strainer, mounting hardware, and faucet. Confirm who will handle any counter modification, cabinet work, or disposal change. The plumber can explain the water and drain connections, but different trades may be needed for surrounding finishes. Having a complete product list lets the installer identify missing pieces before the old sink is removed.

FIELD NOTE

Agree On A Usable Finish

Discuss how the sink will be supported and sealed for its design, then ask for a test of the faucet, drain, and all visible joints. Run water while checking under the cabinet together. Understand any care instructions for the sink surface and sealant before using or cleaning it. Keep the product paperwork, because replacement strainers and accessories often depend on the exact model.
