Water around a heater can come from a nearby connection, a relief outlet, or the tank area. Those possibilities call for different work, so observations from a safe distance are more useful than a quick guess. Treat electrical and gas concerns as separate safety issues.
FIELD NOTE
Start With The Surrounding Area
Keep people away from hot water and wet flooring. Do not touch a wet heater, electrical switch, cord, or panel. If you smell natural gas or suspect a gas leak, leave the area immediately and call the gas utility from a safe location; call emergency services when there is immediate danger. Do not try to locate or repair a gas leak.
FIELD NOTE
Notice Where Water Is Appearing
From a dry position, look for water at the top connections, along a pipe, near the drain or relief discharge, or under the body of the heater. A puddle beneath the unit does not by itself prove the tank failed; water can travel along surfaces. Tell the plumber whether the leak happens continuously or only after hot-water use. Do not block a discharge line or dismantle a valve to investigate.
FIELD NOTE
Use Only Familiar Controls
If the cold-water supply shutoff is clearly identified, works easily, and is safely accessible, closing it may limit water feeding a leak. If reaching it requires crossing water or touching equipment, leave it alone. Avoid changing heater controls or disconnecting power as an improvised response. Explain to the plumber which controls, if any, you used so the system can be assessed accurately.
FIELD NOTE
Prepare For Repair Or Replacement Discussion
Have the heater model or a photo of its label available only if the label is easy to reach safely. Note the age if known, any recent service, changes in hot-water performance, and whether the heater is still in use. Ask what failed and whether a component repair makes sense compared with replacement. The answer depends on the actual leak location and equipment condition.
