THE FIELD GUIDE / LEAK DETECTION

What To Do While An Active Water Leak Is Spreading

Immediate, safe steps to limit water damage before a plumber arrives.

An active leak changes the priority from gathering clues to limiting water and protecting people. The right shutoff depends on the fixture and the property, so act only where the valve is familiar and safe to reach.

FIELD NOTE

Keep People Away From Hazards

Avoid standing water near outlets, wiring, appliances, or electrical panels. Do not enter a wet area to reach a valve if doing so could expose you to electricity or unstable materials. If water is coming through a ceiling or a fixture has pulled loose, keep clear of that area and seek urgent help.

If the leak involves the water heater, do not touch gas or electrical controls or attempt to open its panels. Tell the plumber where the water appears and whether the appliance area is wet. Safety takes precedence over identifying the exact failed part.

FIELD NOTE

Stop The Supply If It Is Safe

A fixture-specific shutoff may stop a leaking toilet or sink supply. A known main shutoff may be appropriate when the source is uncertain or a pipe has burst. Turn only a valve you recognize and can operate without force. If the valve is stuck, inaccessible, or does not stop the water, call the plumber and, where relevant, the water utility for guidance.

After shutting off water, tell other occupants not to use affected fixtures. Avoid repeatedly reopening the supply to see whether the leak returns. That can add damage and make the timeline harder to interpret.

FIELD NOTE

Make The Call Useful

Report the location, whether water is still flowing, the shutoff you used, any electrical concern, and whether the source seems to be a fixture, heater, or hidden line. A photo taken from a safe location can help. Move dry belongings out of the path of water when it is safe to do so, but leave hazardous areas alone.

Once the leak is controlled, ask how the failed section will be located and what access or restoration might be needed. A wet floor does not necessarily place the leak directly below it. A careful diagnosis should come before a permanent repair plan.
